Parts of speech can be taught in only minutes each day! This unit does exactly what the name says: it compacts the study of parts of speech to a short session each day, allowing you to dedicate more time to writing.
Analyzing one sentence each day provides repeated review, scaffolding, and high-level discussion of the way words fit together. As students focus on the purpose of each part of speech in a sentence, they grow to understand how our language works. It’s quick and effective.
This is the basic version of POS: Compacted. It addresses Common Core State Standards L.3.1a (nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs), L.4.1d (order of adjectives), L.4.1e (prepositional phrases), and L.5.1 (conjunctions and prepositions) as it moves through the following topics:
• nouns, verbs, subjects, and predicates
• articles and conjunctions
• sentence types
About nine weeks are needed to cover all parts of speech. “Teacher Talk” provides suggestions on how to present the material to your students. Weekly student worksheets give one sentence for each day, and answer keys are also provided. The unit culminates with a review and summative assessment.
