Product Description
Parts of speech are tough! No matter the age or ability level, students could use a parts of speech refresher. This lock box does just that! Students will use their knowledge of parts of speech in order to solve clues and break out of the box. They will have so much fun trying to solve clues that they will forget they are working on English stuff!

This activity includes all 8 parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. The clues are fun, rigorous, and unique as well!

In actuality, you could have students solve the clues without having any lock boxes. Each clue has a picture of the lock they are trying to open along with the clues. Then, a sheet is included for students to write the code to each lock. Of course, the physical locks are really fun, but I definitely understand school funds are limited. This also works if you have only one lock box for the class to share or several lock box sets for groups.)

***This activity also comes with access to a Google Form so that students can put their answers into the form and get immediate feedback if they are correct or incorrect as long as they have a tech device to use. This way, you don't even have to set physical locks! The form is self-checking! YAY! (A link and a QR code is included so that you can choose what is easiest for your students to access.)

Materials needed (pictures of materials are included in the lesson):
3 digit lock
4 digit lock
5 letter alphabet lock
Directional lock
Box with a lockable clasp
brads (brass fasteners with 2 prongs)

This lesson has step-by-step instructions, hint cards, and well-designed clues to engage your students and get them to think critically.

This lesson may last 75 minutes or longer depending on how well students remember the 8 parts of speech.

*Please note that identifying parts of speech is difficult, and students may need more clues or hints than you usually give. (I had to give my students more help than normal on a lock box activity.) This activity is challenging, and it thoroughly assesses students' knowledge of parts of speech. If it is too difficult for your students, feel free to leave out a lock or two. The 4 digit, 3 digit, and word lock are generally the most challenging for students to solve for this breakout with the directional and padlock being a little easier. You may want to stagger the clues so that students solve hard, easy, hard, easy, and hard instead of them solving all of the difficult clues first.
