This is a fun, low stress way to get to know your students and build classroom community the first few days of school. Not only are students reviewing parts of speech, they are also getting the opportunity to sit next to new peers each day.
Before the first day, tape a "part of speech" with definition to each desk. Keep the "part of speech" cards with the pictures. You will have duplicates as there are only eight different parts of speech (It gives students some choice in which "noun" or "verb" seat they pick! It also encourages students to get to class early).
On the first day of school and for a couple of days after, stand outside your classroom door and greet each student with a "part of speech" card (with picture) before class begins. The student then must find the desk that has the matching card (with definition) taped to it. This then becomes his or her seat. Continue this process until you have a better understanding of student personalities and can make an informed seating chart :)
