This is a series of materials for teaching the parts of speech, using the Montessori colours and shapes for each part. This method associates something concrete (the coloured shape) with an abstract idea (the function of each type of word). It makes word analysis manageable even for young students. While the colours and shapes are Montessori, I designed these materials for use in a non-Montessori environment during my practicum. They can be used in either setting.
It is important to learn the parts of speech to have a strong understanding of grammar and language. It is also helpful when seeing patterns in grammar and spelling. You can start teaching the parts of speech in early primary (please do!), but if that didn't happen, teach them now, whatever age your students are at.
- 8.5x11" posters for each part of speech. (two require hand colouring as they are strange shapes)
- coloured sample/key words to hang under each poster
- a cut and glue matching activity
- parts of speech fill-in glossary and practice page with sentences
- a parts of speech quiz
