Teaching Parts of Speech can be difficult and boring for many students. I found students love a good story as a means by which to remember information. In order to help them I introduce them to a character using the acronym IVAN A CAPP. Through this lesson you will draw a stick figure named Ivan. As you move through the definitions of each Part of Speech you will add things to him and label him. Kids REALLY wrap their brain around this activity. It's a great introduction. I use this color coding system for the rest of the year to help them in language activities. This is great for EOs, ELLs, and older students too! It will probably take about a week or so (teaching on POS a day) to get through the entire thing. The only thing you will need is some silly poetry (I use Shel Sylverstein) for them to practice identifying the types of words as they learn them.
Included in this are both Word and PDF formats, plus multiple pictures of the activity in finished form. Additionally there are lesson plans for each step. The lessons are clear and direct while providing information about thorough instructions for delivery. This is a favorite set of lessons! Don't underestimate the power of a groovy stickman!
