This is a great unit to help teach the parts of a book to your younger students. I usually teach the parts of a book early on in the school year with my PreK, Kinder and 1st grade students, but spend the entire year reviewing it with each new book that we read.

In my first lesson, I go over the poster and add the labels as we talk about them. Afterwards, I take the pieces down and hand them out to students to see if they can remember where they go. I hang a smaller version of this poster on one of the end cabinets, and students like to sit there and practice putting the labels on the correct place.

Once I’ve introduced these terms, I will have the students practice with each new book that we read. As part of our preview book walk, I’ll point to a part of the book and they’ll have to tell me what it is. I also created an “I Have, Who Has” game, and they love playing it! They always want me to time them to see if they can beat their previous time!

As a final assessment, I print an 8x10 copy of the poster and keep it up at the circulation desk. As students come up to check out their books, I’ll point to a part of the book or a part of their book and they have to tell me what it is. This is a quick way to see if they have mastered these concepts.

*Updated 10/6/2015 to include a separate PDF of just the poster and a separate PDF of the labels to make it easier to send off for printing. On 10/10/15 I added pictures of each piece so that you could create your own poster if you wanted.

I hope you find this useful!
