This is a fun PowerPoint game and activity to teach young students the parts of a fiction book. I use the book The Piggy in the Puddle by Charlotte Pomerantz as the example book. This is a fun book to read out loud before doing this activity.
The PowerPoint shows and defines the book cover, title, author, illustrator, spine, spine label, back cover, barcode, title page, dedication page, text and illustrations. The PowerPoint also includes a quick 7 question game to allow students to practice what they have learned. This can be played on an interactive whiteboard or iPad. Finally, students will get to design their own cover of a book and include the elements of title, author, illustrator, spine, spine label and cover illustration.
This PowerPoint game and activity covers these 1st grade and Kindergarten Common Core State Standards:
RL.1.1 - Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
RI.1.5 - Know and use various text features (e.g., headings, tables of contents, glossaries, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text.
RI.1.6 - Distinguish between information provided by pictures or other illustrations and information provided by the words in a text.
SL.1.2 - Ask and answer questions about key details in a text read aloud or information presented orally or through other media.
