Teach your students the parts of argumentative writing using this PowerPoint presentation! This presentation will introduce your students to the basic elements of argumentative writing, a key focus of the Common Core. Students will learn how to make a claim, how to choose effective reasons as support, how and why to make a counterclaim, and how to refute a counterclaim in a rebuttal.
The ZIP file includes the following documents:
1. A PowerPoint presentation that covers the terms claim, reasons, counterclaim, and rebuttal. The slides provide definitions and include embedded checks for understanding. The presentation includes 18 slides plus a cover page.
2. A student note-taker to help students take notes from the slides. Instead of copying the information from the slides, students fill in keywords in the spaces provided. All embedded checks for understanding are included on the student handouts. The note-taker is provided as both a PDF (to prevent formatting differences between computers,) and a Word document (to enable editing.)
If you are looking for writing rubrics, I have both essay and short response rubrics available here.
If your students need help writing in a formal tone, I have a formal writing presentation available here.
