This is one of my students' favorite activities!
Teach your students why they need to know how to compute numbers with decimals and find percents of a whole number in a step-by-step, student led project. Students will enjoy planning the details of a pool party for 20 guests by selecting food, decorations, favors, and party games.
- Students plan the party items
- Predict (estimate) the costs of the items
- Research the actual costs of the items
- Calculate sales tax
- Compare predicted/actual costs
- Reflect on the process of planning a party
- Create an invitation
Includes a 22 point student-rubric and teacher-rubric that covers following directions, mathematical computation, and reflection.
I use this project over two-three days.
Day 1: Planning items, predicting prices, and calculating predicted total.
Day 2: Research prices, calculate prices, and create invitation.
(Optional) Day 3: Finish invitations and class birthday party/presentations. (I offer bonus points to students who bring in their favor or food. I also offered bonus points if they dressed to match their chosen theme!)
