This is absolutely, by far, without a doubt one of my favorite units to do with my students. The projects they create blow my mind; full of innovation and creativity. Through this quarter long project I get to observe my class work through problems, create solutions, support each other as a community, build confidence in their abilities, and discover things they never knew. Since students are able to choose and explore a personal passion through this project, students are invested from start to finish. It is a joy for me as a teacher to facilitate this in my classroom; I get to see students take control of their learning and that is a powerful thing.
With this project, student will gain skills and knowledge of what it means to function in the real world such as problem solving, time management, creative thinking and overcoming failure. The goal is for students to learn these techniques while creating a product (physical, virtual or organization) they personally design.
Students will start by brainstorming passions and setting up a proposal to pitch the idea they come up with. Once their proposal has been approved they will begin working to create this product. The ultimate outcome will be for the students to create something, which encompasses a passion they would like to explore. Along with the product, students will be completing blog posts documenting their progress, effectively commenting on other student’s posts, and reflecting on what and how they learned over the course of this project.
There is a LARGER Unit Bundle I have made which includes a Research Paper Assignment and a Ted Talk Inspired Speech Assignment I like to do along with the Passion Project.
