Use first lines from literature to inspire teen writing!

There is so much power in a great first line. But coming up with that first line can be a daunting task. Especially when you are a teenager, and the subject of your story is that crazy little thing called love.

In honor of Valentine’s Day (though this activity can be used at any time of year), this resource offers a variety of first lines from literature to help inspire students to write love stories, fiction or non-fiction. While some of the source works deal with themes of romantic love, others do not—but all can inspire new tales filled with emotion and passion from your teen writers. Similarly, student stories need not be about romantic love; they can focus on any kind of relationship—whether a friendship, a family tie, a fondness from afar, a passion for a hobby, or even a beloved pet.

Whatever theme students choose, these story-starters can be used to spark a passion for creative writing—and maybe even a love for literature!

The resource includes:

• 16 prompts that can be used for a single lesson or for several weeks of lessons
• Creative lesson ideas to help inspire the love of writing
• Personal narrative graphic organizer
• Fictional narrative graphic organizer
