Address regular and irregular past tense with this sorting activity. Use the first set of cards to teach what past tense is and the pattern for past tense endings by defining and discriminating between past and future tenses. Use the second set of cards to sort between regular past tense ending in the /t/ or /d/ sound. Sorting between ending sounds also helps with phonemic awareness, spelling, and writing skills. Use the third activity to discriminate between regular and irregular past tense.

Mix desired sets of cards and mouse cards in a bag so students cannot see what they are choosing. Students work as a team to sort between future/past tense, t/d ending sounds, or regular/irregular past tense, but try to avoid the mouse! He will eat all your cookies. If you draw a mouse, you must put all your cookies back! At the end of the session, count your cookies to see how many you’ve collected and sorted!
