If your students are like my first graders, they need a lot of practice with adding ed and ing to verbs. This packet provides fun and varied worksheets/activities to help your students get a good grip on all the rules for making verbs past/present tense, including doubling the final consonant, dropping the silent e, and y changing to i.
- Letter Cards – These are individual letter cards (half a page each). Students “act out” the forming of past and present tense verbs by hold up the cards to form verbs. Then ed/ing card are added to act out forming past and present tense verbs. Provided in both color and black and white. 8 pages in black and white, 8 pages in color

Spin a Suffix –Individual activity. Student spins suffix spinner (provided) and adds that suffix to a verb and writes the new verb.
Spin It to Win It – Partner game. Much like Spin a Suffix, except students play against each other.
What’s the Rule? – Partner/small group game. Students sort verbs according to the rule it follows when adding ed or ing. Recording sheet provided.
Super Suffix Game – Partner/small group game. This is a gameboard game. Gameboard is provided in color and black and white. Spinner is provided as well.
Worksheets (36 total):
Many of these worksheets follow the same format and start out simple with just adding –ed and/or –ing, then get progressively more difficult as students have to use spelling rules to correctly add the suffix. For each spelling rule, there are separate worksheets for –ed and –ing, then worksheets that cover both –ed and –ing together.
Fill it up – students fill in present and past tense of verbs in a chart ( 5 total)
Fill in the Blank (13 total)– Students read sentences and fill empty in the blanks by writing the past or present tense of given verbs.
Adding the Suffix –ed and –ing worksheets (11 total) – Students are given a list of verbs and make them past or present tense.
Build It (5 total) – Students cut out letters to build verbs, then add ed/ing and write the word. Great hands on activity for small group or whole class
Super Star Suffixes (1 page)– Cut and Paste Activity. Students cut, sort, then glue word according to the rule they follow when adding ed/ing.
Know the Rule (1 page)– Students color words based on the rule they follow when adding ed/ing.
