I love teaching with picture books! I feel that students at any age enjoy reading picture books and can use them to make connections and look at text in different ways. Author & illustrator Patricia Polacco is my favorite author to use because she has books on many different Lexile levels for differentiation, they cover so many CCSS standards at different levels, and most importantly the books are engaging to all students. Students make deep connections to books like Thank You Mr. Falker, Junkyard Wonders, and When Lightning Comes in a Jar. I have always been able to a pick a Patricia Polacco book to go with a student’s interests or personalities. For this particular unit it focuses on review CCSS standards:
RL 5.6 Describe how a narrators or speakers point of view influences the events described.
RL 5.1: Quote accurately from a text
RL 5.7 Students can explain how visual and multimedia effects the text and reader.
RL 5.3 Compare and contrast characters, setting, and events of the story.
RL 5.4 Understand and comprehend unknown vocabulary
As a whole group instruction for 3-5 days depending on your class time you work through the texts Meteor, John Philip Duck & Junkyard Wonders using the power point and focusing on each lesson and students doing activities independently or in groups. The power point instruction specifically focuses on teaching Point of View and has embedded activities for Point of View. For two days students work through their leveled texts in groups completing the same activities you did as a whole group demonstrating their mastery of the concepts.
This unit could be easily be used in centers or stations as “Folder Activities” or on a menu board for later activities. All of the worksheets are easily modifiable for your specific classroom and up loadable!
