: Remembering September 11. It's important for students to be introduced to the events of 9/11. It changed America, and although we might not want to get into the scary specifics, it is good for them to know the basics of what happened. This banner activity is a great follow up activity to a video, read aloud, or lesson you might be doing on the events.

**If you would rather have something similar in a poster format instead of a banner, check the activity out by clicking: HERE.
It makes a perfect hallway display, bulletin board display, or you can connect them to make a fun classroom banner that hangs in your class. It would work well to hang for the entire month of September and even beyond.
The banner has some basic facts at the top of the page. This can be used to introduce them to the events or as a review. It's a great way to get conversations started.
It says, "Sadly, terrorists attacked the United States on September 11, 2001. It was an American tragedy. Four planes were hijacked while in route to their destinations. All four planes crashed. Two crashed into the World Trade Center towers, one crashed into the Pentagon, and the last went down in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 men, women, and children died. Patriot Day is observed each year on September 11th. It is a day to remember those who lost their lives."
The writing on the banner focuses more on positives than the negatives associated with the events.... about America, heroes, and being a Patriot.
After reading the message above, students will fill in the following information on the Patriot Day banner:
‣Why do you think America is referred to as America the Beautiful?
‣The first responders of 9/11 are viewed as heroes. What is a hero?
‣A patriot is..... (They may be able to find this in their social studies books or you can have them look it up. You could also give them the definition and let them write it in.)
‣It's important to remember 9/11 because..... (After you discuss what happened, they should be able to come up with reasons as to why it is important.)
‣I love America because.......
‣Patriotic/9-11 themed banner pieces are also included to add to the banner. It adds some pep and pizzazz to your display.
‣BONUS.... (optional) a back side is included if you want your students to write more facts about the events of 9/11. You could even have them write a story from the perspective of someone that was at the towers and survived. You could also have them write about their own hero or maybe a thank you to first responders, as they are life savers in every day situations. Use it however you would like.
Your students are sure to love making these Patriot Day banners.
