It's a "Patriot Day" one-page 8.5x11 poster activity. Remember September 11. It's important for students to be introduced to the events of 9/11. It changed America, and although we might not want to get into the scary specifics, it is good for them to know the basics of what happened. This banner activity is a great follow up activity to a video, read aloud, or lesson you might be doing on the events.
**If you would rather have something similar in a banner format instead of a poster, check the activity out by clicking: HERE.
I am marking this poster for grades 3-5, but it may be appropriate for other grades. Rather than having me decide, please think about your students in order to make a decision.
This poster will look great hanging outside your classroom, and parents will enjoy reading them when they are sent home.
They make a perfect hallway display, bulletin board display. They would work well hanging for the entire month of September and even beyond.
At the top of the banner it says, "Patriot Day is observed each year on September 11th. It is a day to remember the nearly 3,000 people who lost their lives due to the 9/11 terrorist attacks."
The writing on the banner focuses more on positives than the negatives associated with the events.... about America, heroes, finding good in people, and what a patriot is.
After reading the message above, students will fill in the following information on the Patriot Day banner:
‣Why do you think America is referred to as America the Beautiful?
‣The first responders of 9/11 are viewed as heroes. What is a hero?
‣A patriot is..... (They may be able to find this in their social studies books or you can have them look it up. You could also give them the definition and let them write it in.)
‣It's important to remember 9/11 because..... (After you discuss what happened, they should be able to come up with reasons as to why it is important.)
‣I love America because.......
‣Despite the terrorism of 9/11, there is still a lot of good in the world. Tell about someone doing good in the world.
‣Write 3 facts about 9/11 they learned in class or researched.
Your students are sure to love making these Patriot Day posters.
