How did the eastern North American Indians lose their land to the English colonists? Textbooks have typically glossed over this chapter of American history - until now. Included is the chapter "Pattern of Conquest" from my textbook "We Take Nothing by Conquest," a history of the United States from Columbus to Reconstruction. This chapter covers the myriad ways English colonists gained ownership of Indian land - some honest, and many not so. It also examines the different ways the two cultures viewed land use and ownership.
