This resource has a variety of different 3 part math lessons you can introduce to your students when teaching a patterning unit.
The tasks are suitable for grade 4 but are also suitable for grade 5 students who require a review of patterning and how to work through word problems.
For each lesson there is a learning goal. For example:
Learning Goal: We are learning to extend, describe and create, growing and shrinking number patterns.
Each question or task requires prior teaching around patterning, showing your thinking and using math strategies. This resource is an excellent tool to use as practice before a final assessment or culminating task. Your students will be asked to use critical thinking skills and should be given lots of time to answer the question.
When working on these lessons with my own students, I provide lots of chart paper, markers and manipulatives if needed to allow students to visual their thinking on paper. I also find these questions are a great way to assess collaboration when students are working with their math partners.
