It patterning unit focuses on creating, naming, extending and reproducing repeating patterns. It includes activities to practice AB, ABB, AAB, AABB, ABC and ABCD patterns.
p. 4-15: Pattern Block Cards: 3 version (colourful, simple and B&W) included. Please print and use the one you like best! You can have students practice reproducing and extending patterns with these cards.
p. 16-26: Counting Bear Cards: There are 2 versions of these cards (with and without the sentence at the bottom). You can have students practice reproducing, extending and naming patterns with these cards.
p. 27-35: Snap Cube Cards: There are 2 versions of these cards (with and without the sentence at the bottom). You can have students practice reproducing, extending and naming patterns with these.
p. 36-37: You can use these to sort the snap cube pattern cards or other patterns students make.
p. 38-43: Extending Size Patterns: Have the students extend size patterns with these cards.
p. 44-49: Extending Shape Patterns: Have the students extend shape patterns with these cards.
p. 50: Sentence Prompt Cards: My students use these to help them write sentences about the patterns they have made.
p. 51: Pattern Play Dough Mat: Have students practice creating, extending and naming patterns with play dough and this mat.
p. 52-53: Open Ended Pattern Mats: I have these available for students to build and name their own patterns on using a variety of manipulatives.
p. 54-55: Pattern Strips: I have students use these strips to help them build patterns. The students build patterns under the strip. I laminate them and encourage students to colour in the core of the pattern with dry-erase markers.
p. 56-71: How Many Ways Can You Make a Pattern?: This activity encourages students to make a variety of patterns and introduces the concept of translating patterns. Be sure to put our a variety of manipulatives so the students are able to create a shape, colour or size patterns. Mats in both colour/B&W and Canadian/American spelling (for colour/color).
p. 72-75: Copy the pages you prefer and have students make pattern mini books! I set these out with bingo dabbers, stickers, stamps etc but it works with just crayons and markers as well!
Separate file: A PowerPoint file that you can use on your interactive whiteboard or projector as a whole group lesson. Also included in pdf format incase you don't have PowerPoint!
Separate file #2: Can you make these patterns mat? - A pattern mat with spaces to make an AB, AAB, ABB, ABC, ABCD, AABB, ABBA, AABBCC, ABCB and ABCDE patterns! I used them with rhinestones but they would work with any small manipulative or loose parts!
