PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a great resource for sample PATTERNS, RELATIONSHIPS, AND ALGEBRAIC THINKING word problems. Sample problems, task analysis and test-taking strategies are given for each of the following:

Identify All Possible Outcomes Determine All Possible Combinations
Determine All Possible Combinations with a Given Number of Choices Determine the Number of Possible Arrangements
Identify the Method for Determining the Number of Possible Arrangements Identify the Mathematical Symbols and Words for Determining the Number of Possible Arrangements
Use a Chart to Find Patterns Use a Diagram to Find Patterns Identify a Prime Number
Identify Characteristics of Composite Numbers Apply the Divisibility Rule
Use Models to Show Composite Numbers Identify a Number Sentence with Multiple Steps
Identify a Number Sentence to Solve for a Missing Addend Identify a Number Sentence for Multiple Steps

The task analysis shows what a student must know and be able to do to show quality success with the sample item. This better ensures a depth of understanding of the tested concept. All of the listed skills in a task analysis may not be required for the sample item, but they may be necessary for similar items. This is a great resource for academic vocabulary.

The given test-taking strategy is not the only possible strategy or the easiest strategy for solving the sample item. It is designed to require the student to apply the student expectations for this grade level. The strategy is also designed to require the students to show their work in a way that allows the teacher to diagnose their needs.

Reproducible word problems are provided for each sample item. The font size is appropriate for projection.

The appendix includes a document explaining the “Unit-Rate Method.” In solving situations involving groups of equal size, the unit-rate method helps students record data from the problem and identify the arithmetic concept as multiplication or division.
