This Force and Motion for Patterns in Motion 5E Model Unit Plan is an inquiry-based unit using the 5E Model lesson plans. It focuses on patterns in motion, including the concepts of forces that affect patterns in motion. Throughout the unit students make observations and measurements of an object's motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion. Each stage of the model serves as a foundation to the next, creating a coherent model that frames lessons, activities, and units.

Objectives and Timeline for Each Section of the 5E Patterns in Motion Unit

Engage
Objectives:
→ Students will access their prior knowledge about how objects move.
→ Student interest in patterns in motion will be sparked.
→ The teacher will be able to identify student misconceptions about patterns in motion.

Parts and Duration:
• Part 1 (What Is This?): 10 minutes
• Part 2 (My Experiences): 15 minutes
• Part 3 (Introducing): 15 minutes

Explore
Objectives:
→ Students will work together to investigate patterns in motion. They will do this by observing a marble in a bowl and a skateboard in a halfpipe.
→ Students will gather very general information about factors that affect patterns in motion.
→ Students will use observations and information to make a hypothesis about forces that affect the motion of a skateboard in a halfpipe.
→ Students will plan an investigation and test their hypothesis.

Parts and Duration:
* Part 1 (Check It Out): 15 minutes
* Part 2 (Read About It): 20 minutes
* Part 3 (You Try It): 30 minutes

Explain
Objectives:
→ Students will work collaboratively to determine what affected the motion of their skateboards.
→ Students will listen to the teacher’s explanation about patterns in motion.
→ Students will use the new information to revise their explanations about the factors that caused the pattern in the motion of their slides.

Parts and Duration:
→ Part 1 (What Does It Mean?): 10 minutes
→ Part 2 (What Is Force?): 20 minutes
→ Part 3 (Putting It All Together): 15 minutes

Extend
Objectives:
→ Students will apply what they have learned about patterns in motion to a new situation.
→ Students will deepen their understanding of patterns in motion, gaining a more generalized knowledge of these specific scientific concepts.
→ The teacher will resolve all persisting student misconceptions about patterns in motion.

Parts and Duration:
• Part 1 (What's the Pattern?): 15 minutes
• Part 2 (Show What You Know): 25 minutes
• Part 3 (Have Fun With It!): 15 minutes

Evaluate
Objectives:
→ Students will evaluate their own understanding of force and motion.
→ Students will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the concepts and vocabulary.
