In this activity, students will analyze two different accounts of the same event, and through the use of text evidence, determine the validity of each source as accurate historical information. Students will analyze The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, as well as the primary source document of Paul Revere's manuscript deposition of his ride.
Purchase includes a comparison matrix for the document analysis, analysis questions, a copy of The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, and an internet link to the primary source document. There, you can view the primary source image, the transcript, and request to be sent your own duplication of the document from the National Archives.
I did this activity with my fifth graders, but they required a lot of guidance through the vocabulary within the two documents. They did well with it though and were very engaged, especially when determining myth vs. fact about the event.
