Peace doesn’t need to be a topic reserved for International Peace Day. With all the conflict, fear, and war that permeates the world, peace is a conversation we need to have with our students at any time. Classes with ESL students who might also be refugees from war-torn countries would especially benefit from getting the chance to see that all their classmates, regardless of where they are from, want peace. That not everyone will agree on what it is or how to get it will give students other perspectives that can help them better understand the world they live in.
Find out what they think and encourage them to use varied expressions for sharing and asking for opinions as well as agreeing and disagreeing. (You may be interested in my Expressions for Opinions resource to ensure that your ESL students can use a good variety of expressions.)
