To appreciate the work done by Peace Corps volunteers in developing nations.
1 and 1/2 class periods
Students begin the activity by reading several paragraphs of background information about the Peace Corps. Topics include the organization's history, goals, requirements and skills of members, etc. Once finished, they answer 15 multiple-choice and true/false questions based on the reading.
Later in the period, you can go over the directions for a writing/role play assignment where students pretend they have just returned to the United States from a developing nation in Africa. They served two years in a rural village as a Peace Corps volunteer and must now write a story (150+ words) about their experiences. A list of ten requirements/guidelines for the stories is provided to help the kids construct their stories.
Everyone should finish their stories for the next day, when several volunteers can be given an opportunity to read theirs to the class.
Easy-to-follow Teacher Instructions and answer key included.
