Description

These 50 quotations by U.S. presidents, Nobel Peace Prize winners, and other famous people will get your students thinking about the meaning of peace and how to achieve it. There are 3 writing prompts that can be used with the quotations and an assessment rubric is provided so you can easily evaluate your students' responses. You can also just display the quotations on a bulletin board.

✓ Please note:

A paperless version of this resource is available HERE.

You can use these quotations in many ways:

* As a short writing task for your students at the end of a period.

* Have your students discuss the prompts in small groups or pairs.

* Use these quotations in a language arts class when you are reading a novel whose theme is war or peace.

* Use them in a writing center.

* Do research about the people who said the quotes.

* Categorize the quotations based on the occupations of the people or on the themes of the quotations.

* Since there are quotations by people from all over the world, you can also use them in a social studies class and match the people to the regions or countries your students are learning about.

The quotations are of varying lengths and text complexity so students with a range of reading abilities will be able to use them. English Language Learners can respond to the quotes that are very short and use simpler language. Students at higher reading levels can work on the longer and more difficult quotations.

Each quotation is on a separate 8.5" x 11" sized paper. The text of the quotations is color-coded for your convenience:

* American presidents are in blue and red.

* Nobel Peace Prize winners are in green.

* All the remaining posters are in 9 other colors.

This way, if you only want to display posters from one group, you can easily find them. To save on paper and ink, you might like to print them 4 or 6 to a page, if your printer settings have that option.
