Peanut Butter & Cupcake by Terry Border is one of my favorite stories. The illustrations are so life like, rich in figurative language, and so many life lessons that can be taught. As an SLP I love sharing this story within the classroom setting. Although the activity is simple it is a hit every time. This activity encourages your students to problem solve, ask/answer questions, and communicate with their classmates. It is also a great activity to use with a buddy class.
First engage your students in a shared reading activity. When Peanut Butter and Jelly become friends close the book and stop reading. Now give each student, teacher, and or team member one “Go Together” puzzle piece (included). Instruct the students to find who they “Go Together” with. (i.e. Shovel & pail, bat & ball, pencil & paper). When they find the correct partner the puzzle pieces should fit together. Return to the reading area and share as a group. Re-enforce the idea that they “Go Together” as friends. After you have read the ending of story, present the three large puzzle pieces. Discuss with your students how they not only “Go Together” as friends, but as a class, and especially as a school community.
