Phonics Boxes are activities formatted for the boxes available at Michaels that contain 16 smaller boxes. These activities can also be stored in 6x9 brown envelopes or any other way you would like to store them. Each “box” contains a sound or syllable sort and a flashcard activity/game. The cards can also be used just as flashcards and, if laminated, you can have your students use dry erase markers to highlight phonic concepts (such as vowels, digraphs, blends, etc.) There is a title card for the front of the box or envelope and directions. I use double-sided tape to adhere them.
Word Sort: Print, laminate, and cut out the header cards and the word cards with the “j” sound blank. Students take turns sorting by which spelling will complete the word.
“Peanut Butter & Jelly”: Print, laminate and cut out the word cards. Each card has a word with the “j” sound and either peanut butter, jelly, or both. Shuffle the cards. Students take turns reading the cards. The object of the game is to collect the most pairs of peanut butter and jelly. If they get a card with both peanut butter and jelly, it counts as a pair.
