Use this package to teach your students the parallels between the 9/11 attacks and Pearl Harbor. These two events create a much more "real" feeling for the students as they have grown up in the aftermath of 9/11.
This lesson will introduce students to the main cause of the United States declaring war on Japan: Pearl Harbor. This is a catastrophic event paralleled only by an event such as 9/11 and should be treated as such. The students will analyze primary sources of individuals who were present at Pearl Harbor during the attack, as well as Japanese accounts, and Americans on the mainland.
This lesson comes after we have spent some time discussing the individual causes of war in Europe and Asia. At this point we will bring the United States involvement in the war into focus with the attack on Pearl Harbor and the declaration of war on Japan, and war on us by Germany 3 days later.
