What educators are saying

This really was an authentic assessment for my students learning about pedigrees and genetic counseling. Thanks for making it!
This was a great conclusion to our inheritance unit. It takes out any awkwardness for students who are adopted. Thank you for this fun and informative activity.

Description

This is my MOST FAVORITE PROJECT of ALL TIME!!! I have used it for nine years and have really fine-tuned it over time. I use this with my 9th and 10th graders in Gen Bio.

I count it as the test for my genetics and heredity unit. Students will choose a genetic condition to research (each person will have a unique one), and then they have to create three things based on that condition: an information/summary sheet about the condition, a family tree/pedigree that traces the condition through a hypothetical family, and a genetic counseling sheet in which they provide advice about having children (or not) based on the pedigree they created.

This activity is a great way to have students…

1) apply their knowledge about genetics and heredity in a relevant, real-life manner.

2) really show you what they know—it’s an authentic assessment that goes beyond the level of a “spit and forget” test.

3) think critically and have fun while doing it!

My students love this project, and remember it forever!!! Whenever my upper-level students see Bio students working on the project, they start reminiscing about it and always discuss how much fun it was!

Check out the preview for required prior knowledge, a suggested schedule, walkthrough videos, information about grading, and views of everything included in the zipped folder. I also included a student sample.

I hope you and your students have a blast with this project!!!
