PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This is a simple but effective grading rubric for students who are participating in literature circles or book clubs.

My 6th grade language arts students absolutely love book club; the meetings are their favorite part of the week. However, I noticed that a few students would sometimes get off-task when I wasn't observing their group directly.

The solution? I wanted to hold them accountable to themselves and to their peers, so I created this rubric. At the end of a full book club cycle (3 weeks with 2 meetings per week in our case), each student rates every member of the group, including him or herself, in four key areas. While I only count it as a small grade, the added responsibility and accountability has gone a long way to keep them focused and on-task.

My students' enjoyment of reading novels has skyrocketed since we started doing book club, and this self- and peer-grading rubric has "upped the ante" on their level of engagement.
