Running out of or constantly losing pencils is a headache that interrupts instruction time almost daily. We all have the students that mutilate pencils, rip off the erasers and sharpen both ends, sharpen the pencil until it is not even an inch long, etc, etc, etc.
I have a fun solution that makes the students be the ones responsible for keeping up with their pencils, and adds some fun!
Students are given a numbered (or named) pencil that is their priority. Their mission is to be the HERO to that pencil - not lose it or do any of those things that students generally do to ruin a pencil.
A quick (and I mean QUICK) check is done periodically (however often you choose) to see who still has their assigned pencil.
If they still have it - they get to be in the Pencil Hero Hall of Fame and it is displayed for all to see.
