“Pencil Preps” is an activity for the spatial concepts in, under, over, beside, behind, between, in front, and on. There is a pencil cup with the concept noted on it plus 1 page of pencil pictures for each concept.
Choose the two concepts you want to target:
Step 1: Demonstrate the concepts with real life items.
Step 2: Lay out the pencil cup pictures for the two concepts and gather the picture cards for the two concepts. The students sort the cards according to the concept. Make sure they are describing the picture with complete sentences.
Step 3: Add in the “broken pencil” cards with the picture cards. Students take turns drawing a card and describing the picture using the spatial concepts. If correct they keep the card. If they draw a “broken pencil” card, they put one card back. The student with the most pencils at the end is the winner.
