Product Description
The Pendulum Inquiry Science Lab encourages your physics students to take the lead in their own learning. In this lab, science students will design their own experiment to find out what variable has the greatest impact on the length of a pendulum’s periods. Basically, students will use principles of the scientific method and experimental design to answer this question: What can you change about a pendulum to make it swing faster?

As a special bonus, I’ve included the Experimental Design Form to help your students plan their experiment. This document can be used over and over again to plan other student-designed labs! Teacher instructions for this document are included, so you're getting big value… two products for the price of one!

This lab includes detailed teacher instructions to guide you through introducing the lab and experimental design to your students. I've included a list of things to look for when evaluating experiment proposals as well as extension ideas to take the learning experience further. A worksheet of lab analysis questions is also included.

Due to the inquiry nature of this lab, no “procedures” document is included. Your students will design and carry out their own original plan. Additionally, due to the wide variety of results that could be produced from the multitude of experiments your students could design, no sample data are included.

I suggest one 40-minute class period to introduce the lab and allow your students to plan their experiment. If your students have never designed their own experiment, then you may need additional time. Allow one more class period for students to collect and analyze their lab data.

This lab is appropriate for grades 9-12 in general science, physical science, or physics classes. It could be used to introduce experimental design or incorporated into other units, especially energy and momentum. I hope that you and your students will find this to be a unique and engaging lab experience!
