Close reading works to help teachers gradually release responsibility to students while reading. The process of close reading enables students to feel comfortable and independent while tackling complex texts. Teachers model the practice of reading closely and then teach strategies that will help students to reading closely in the future. Close reading gives children the opportunity to take NEW information from a text and add it to their existing background knowledge to increase their schema.
