You will find five penguin poems along with a written activity for each. The written activities include identifying:
-long/short I words
-words with suffixes
-syllables in one line
(Please note-these skills are not used with each poem but over the use of all five poems!)
Students are asked to visualize one poem and create a caption recounting the important facts from it.
Another poem includes sentence strips so students can put the poem in sequential order.
The last poem asks students to label the parts of a penguin’s body with facts from the poem.
There is also a Think Grid. Students are asked to find words to write in the grid according to particular categories that start with a letter from the word PENGUINS. It’s a great higher level thinking activity or you can use it for your early finishers!
Finally, you will find a Poetry Recitation Rubric in case you want students to memorize and recite a poem for the class. This is a wonderful activity to videotape and think of all of the fluency practice a students gets!!
