Do you struggle having your students produce a meaningful research project? We have found that students love selecting their own topic and researching when the final product is a PowerPoint. We work on the research and PowerPoint project during small guided reading groups. This gives the advanced readers the opportunity to soar ahead, and the struggling readers the opportunity to have the much needed support to produce a meaningful product. We implement this project after 3rd grade Journey’s Lesson 20. The Vocabulary Reader for lesson 20 is titled Emperor Penguins. It is not necessary that you use Journeys to use this product. It can be used as a standalone research project on penguins.
This product includes:
• an editable parent letter explaining the project
• an editable calendar to help organize the implementation of the project
• Tri-Fold Note Taking form- specific to penguins
• Rubric for Student PowerPoint presentation
• Information sheet on how to implement this project during small group reading block
We had students present their PowerPoints the last week of school. It was a great way to keep the students engaged up to the very end. I even one student teach others how to insert sound effects into their presentations.
