This is an integrated unit based on the picture book, Penguin On Vacation by Salina Yoon. In this adorable story, Penguin floats away to vacation at a sunny beach. When vacation time is over, his new friend Crab decides that he needs a vacation, too, and ventures to Penguin's icy home. What your children will love doing: forming opinions about snowy activities that they would like/dislike, reasoning about what caused Penguin to need a vacation, helping Penguin to "pack" his bag, writing captions under the "snapshots" in Penguin's scrapbook of memories, writing a postcard to send to Penguin's Grandpa, and writing about wishing on a star. Included are word work activities involving homonyms and "-ing" ending words. Comprehension work, 2 word searches, and making words from the word "vacation" will also be enjoyed. In the math arena, colorful beach towel number cards are used to play 4 different games: Greatest Ten Math War, Least Ten Math War, What Comes Next? and Before and After. Response sheets are included and can be used for other classroom math work as well. Use the 12 bright vocabulary words on your focus wall as you teach this unit, and your independent writers will take off!
