Penguin and Pinecone is an AMAZING children's book that can be used as a mentor text for different comprehension and writing skills. I use it to teach theme and author's message, especially with my 2nd and 3rd graders.
The themes of friendship and love are carried throughout the book and are evident in two of the author's messages: "Friendship lasts forever, even if you're miles apart" and "Love only grows over time."
This resource requires students to use evidence from the text to support their author's message claims (CCSS, RL.1). There are five graphic organizers available for you to use in small groups, literacy centers, or independently. Complete as a shared lesson activity or have students complete them independently.
The five graphic organizers included in this resource provide opportunities for differentiation and student choice. Students can share their understanding of author's message through written response and visualizations.
This 6-page resource includes:
- 1 Author's Message Poster
- 5 Author's Message Graphic Organizers
