PENGUINS: Fluency and Writing: This is a quick reading inventory, informal assessment, or daily nonfiction reading passage with follow-up writing to check comprehension. Check fluency and comprehension with this one page passage and accompanying running record sheet.

The cloze activity is important for assessing comprehension and vocabulary understanding. But it can be used as a lesson activity.

The vocabulary page is a good tool for checking understanding of words from the text.

*The text level is written at a 2nd grade level. (Level is based on vocabulary and sentence structure.)

The running record is easy to use...so you can monitor your student's reading progress. Use it as a repeated reading, too!

You can use this as a quick, informal reading inventory using a nonfiction passage on a topic about penguins.

This literacy resource has different uses, such as--

*an informal reading inventory, or a progress monitoring passage.

*a partner reading activity.

*a daily reading lesson

* as independent work, or homework (without the record of oral reading page)

*may be used for practice as a repeated, timed reading, in which you give it to your students a few times over a specific period (e.g., week, month) to see how they are progressing, you will see an increase in fluency. In that case, you may want to laminate the passage to use over and over. Or, place it in a plastic sheet protector.

"Repeated timed reading" is an effective intervention technique for improving fluency.
