Penguins, Otters and the Open Ocean: Using Technology and Videos to Learn In a Fun Way
This unit is built around live feeds from video cameras from the Monterey Bay Aquarium in Monterey, CA. My students LOVE to watch the otters and see what they are doing on a daily basis. They also love to watch the open sea cam (we talk about schools of fish, tuna fish, sea turtles, sharks- mainly hammerhead and sometimes you get to see other things!). We also watch the penguins- the kids love to watch the days where the "viewing bubble" actually has children in it watching the penguins.
This unit includes:
Intro on Otters telling where to find the web camera.
Map of California where you can locate Monterey.
A small information book about sea otters.
3 observation pages- logging sheets to observe the otters on 4 different occasions. The last page combines the information from the previous 4 observations.
Information page about feeding times with the otters- check this out and make sure you put your speakers on for your computer- you will actually hear the workers talking during this time.
1 page for recording on with video suggestions of otters in their real environments.
1 Sea Otters graphic organizer to record facts about them.
1 page to write sentences about the facts about sea otters.
Open Sea Camera: log on information
3 pages for observations: 2 logging sheets for 4 different observations and one sheet at the end to compare the observations.
1 drawing/writing page of animals they observed from this camera
1 graphic organizer to write about one animal they liked in the sea cam. .
Penguins: Log on information to get you to the web camera.
Map for Monterey in the State of California.
3 pages for observation for the penguins... 2 pages observe them 4 different times and the last page compares the observations.
1 page for their feeding times-kids can listen to the workers at the aquarium tell kids about the penguins.
