Students often struggle with the concepts of main idea and supporting details. This activity requires students to read fact cards about penguins and then match each card to a main idea mat. The activity provides 5 main ideas and 6 related details for each main idea.
Includes Paragraph and Essay Writing Extension Activities:
One extension involves the students in writing a paragraph for each of the 5 main ideas and then combining them for an essay on penguins.
A second activity asks the students to do further reading/research to add a new main idea with supporting details.
Penguin themed writing paper is provided.
This can be used for a simple main idea/detail sorting activity, a paragraph writing activity, or it can be developed into a full unit on essay writing. It is very useful in modeling the essay writing process.
The essay writing is effective with guided reading/writing groups. (The activity takes several days.)
Students work together to sort the facts.
Students sequence the facts for one main idea.
Students decide how to write the information using "their own words".
They revise by adding transitions between sentences.
Repeat for other paragraphs - or have different groups responsible for different paragraphs.
Sequence the paragraphs.
When all of the paragraphs are written, students work to write an introduction, transitions between paragraphs, and a conclusion.
