A fun game to show students how to exchange money. This game mat was created to go along with the Penny-Nickel Exchange game in Everyday Math, Unit 2 for 1st grade. I created this mat to help my visual learners see the 5 pennies they needed in order to get 1 nickel. Directions are on the worksheet for those that do not use EDM.
How to play:
Each group of 2 receives a bag with 20 pennies and 10 nickels. Students take turns rolling a die, they take the number of pennies shown on the die and lay them on the mat. When students collect 5 pennies they make an exchange for 1 nickel. The game ends when all 10 nickels are gone. The player with the most nickels wins.
