Penny Pig is a dice counting game for Pre-K and Kindergarten students. The mat features a happy pink piggy bank with a curly tail.
Print four mats on cardstock or matte photo paper and laminate for extra durability. Use the mat with dice and real pennies. I keep about 100 pennies in a metal box labeled "BANK." Children take turns rolling the dice and taking money from the box to put into their piggy banks. When the BANK is empty, we count our pennies. The person with the most pennies is the winner.
I use this game in one of my Guided Math stations. It is a fun way to teach one-to-one correspondence as well as vocabulary ex. more, less, equal to, same, different. You can also extend the activity by making a graph or modeling in ten-frames how much money each student has in his/her bank. As a differentiation you may use the addition/subtraction cards in the PDF instead of dice.
