A spin on the classic problem of exponential growth. Students explore the amount of money to be made in a month if they receive 1 penny, double that amount the next day, etc.
Works great as a warm up, the hook to a lesson, or an investigation. It has easy to follow directions, colorful pictures and an organized space (chart) to show the progression of money from day to day.
This was specifically designed to show the power of knowing a general rules versus a rule. More specifically, going from day to day on the chart is relatively simple on a calculator (multiply by two and add 1) but time consuming when trying to find out how much money you have on day 30. Knowing the general rule however can quickly reveal the result for any given day without even using the chart!
It also briefly touches on how to show the relationship between any day of the month and the amount of pennies earned as an equation using two variable. The power of Algebra and the use of equations to communicate these relationships is what this activity is all about.
