Perfect literacy center!
Write "penny words" on slips of paper, or penny cut outs ("penny" meaning common, overused, tier 1 words)
Some examples are: good, happy, sad, bad, mean, fun, said, cool, etc.
Students then choose a "penny word" and try to come up with "dollar words" in place of that word ("dollar" meaning higher level of difficulty, tier 3 words)
Some examples are:
Happy - ecstatic, enthused, thrilled
Good - amazing, great, wonderful, terrific
Said - exclaimed, replied, retorted, scoffed, yelled, whined, stated
