    Following Directions Test

    ◾ Teacher instructions

    ◾ 3rd-5th grade Texas TEK* standards alignment, including vertical alignment

    ◾ Three versions of the Following Directions Assessment:

    ---> Two "trick" versions of the test with goofy instructions in numbers 1-10 but the real instructions in small gray text at the bottom of the page

    ---> One legitimate version of the test with instructions that a typical elementary school teacher would have as a routine at the start of class

    ◾ Both black-and-white and color options

    *Note: There are no Common Core State Standards about following directions, which is why I opted to use Texas TEK standards instead.

    What are my recommendations for using these resources in your classroom?

    Get to Know You BINGO Activity

    ◾ I recommend using this in the first days of school at the start of the new school year. If you are a specials teacher and have a new group of students at the semester change, for example, then you can use this at the new semester, as well.

    ◾ This resource comes in both color and black-and-white. You can try printing the black-and-white version on colored paper or allow students to sign their names in crayons, colored pencils, or marker to make it a little more fun!

    ◾ Participate in the BINGO activity yourself! It's a great opportunity for you to learn more about your students and for them to learn about you - right off the bat!

    ◾ Although this has been aligned to Speaking and Listening standards from the Common Core, I don't recommend taking this for a grade or tying some kind of academic purpose to it. It should be utilized as a fun, low-key icebreaker activity that will help you build community in your classroom.

    Following Directions Test

    ◾ I recommend using this in the first days of school at the start of the new school year.

    ◾ This resource comes in both color and black-and-white. You can print the black-and-white version on colored paper to make it a little more fun!

    ◾ The "trick" versions of the test have the real instructions at the bottom of the page in small gray text. The purpose of this following directions test in general is to encourage students to read the whole assignment before getting started, which is why these "trick" versions are set up this way. I definitely recommend only reading the directions at the top of the page and not bringing any attention to the bottom of the page! Let your students figure it out for themselves.

    ◾ On the Teacher Instructions page, I've included several suggested questions that you can use for a whole-group discussion at the end of the activity. The questions are designed to get students thinking and conversing about why it's important to follow directions and what the consequences might be if they don't.

    ◾ Although this has been aligned to a few of the Texas TEKS about following directions and listening attentively, I don't recommend taking this for a grade or tying some kind of academic purpose to it. It should be utilized as a fun, low-key activity that will help you ease your students back into the school routine at the beginning of the year.
