Mole Unit

Students will be able to…

· Calculate the percent composition of compounds.

· Calculate the percent composition of a crème filled cookie. Students will calculate the percent by mass of the two components (crème filling and 2 wafers) in a cookie.

Directions:

o First, teach students how to tare/zero-out a balance and record measurements accurately. See “Lab Skill: How to “Tare” / “Zero-out” a Balance” and “Percent Comp. COOKIE Lab – TEACHER INSTRUCTIONS” for more information.

o Next, have students complete the Pre-Lab questions for the “Percent Comp. COOKIE Lab.”

o Then, have students complete the “Percent Comp. COOKIE Lab.”

o Recommendation: Students cannot eat the cookie used in the lab for sanitary reasons. After the cookie used in the lab is thrown away and students have exited the lab area, give each student a cookie to eat.

· Assign “Percent Composition – WS #1” and “Percent Composition – WS #2” as needed for extra practice, HW, warm-up, or exit-ticket.
