This is the summative assessment I use with my 6th grade advanced math students, who study 7th grade math concepts, at the end of our unit on percents. We complete this unit after our unit on ratios and proportional reasoning, so that the students are able to use their knowledge of proportional relationships to learn about and solve percent application problems. All of the problems on this assessment are application problems, because this is what the Common Core Mathematics Standard states. The assessment tells the students they are taking a family vacation to Hawaii, and that they will have to use their knowledge of percents to make financial decisions about their trip. Prior to this summative assessment, the students have practiced, been formatively assessed on, and received feedback on percent application problems. This is one of the more challenging summative assessments my students tackle throughout the year, because it is so focused on application of their learning.
