Understanding a skill is much more than memorizing a procedure. To understand a skill, students must understand the background information, the underlying skills, necessary to make sense of the concept. In order to understand, students must connect the steps in a procedure with a representative model and be able to solve problems mentally or on paper. The percent previews in this document are meant to be used in the following way:
Supplement the regular curriculum with five-minute student-centered lessons to help students gain a deeper understanding of percents.
Students use a double fraction bar model to solve one percentage problem each day for two weeks prior to learning a standard algorithm for solving percent problems. It is important that the thinking used in the models correspond with the thinking they will use with the procedures in the standard algorithm.
