PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Understanding a skill is much more than memorizing a procedure. To understand a skill, students must understand the background information, the underlying skills, necessary to make sense of the concept. In order to understand, students must connect the steps in a procedure with a representative model and be able to solve problems mentally or on paper. The percent previews in this document are meant to be used in the following way:

Supplement the regular curriculum with five-minute student-centered lessons to help students gain a deeper understanding of percents.
Students use a double fraction bar model to solve one percentage problem each day for two weeks prior to learning a standard algorithm for solving percent problems. It is important that the thinking used in the models correspond with the thinking they will use with the procedures in the standard algorithm.

Included:
*10 problems (one problem each day) to be used prior to a unit on percentages
*Detailed answers and discussion questions to help guide students to connect the conceptual model to an algorithm for solving proportions.

Common Core Standards:
CCSS.Math.Content.6.RP.A.3c Find a percent of a quantity as a rate per 100.
CCSS.Math.Content.7.RP.A.3 Use proportional relationships to solve multistep ratio and percent problems.
