This hands-on sort is to help kids practice recognizing the type of percent word problem. There are three types of percent word problems:
1) When you are given the part and the whole, the unknown is the percent.
2) When you are given the whole and the percent, the unknown is the part.
3) When you are given the part and the percent, the unknown is the whole.
Each "type" of word problem requires a different solution strategy, so it is essential that students are able to recognize the givens and the unknown. Students categorize the 9 word problems into the three above categories and of course, can then solve the problems.
